In-Class Writing: Analyzing a Rhetorical Pattern

Here are steps you can follow to analyze a rhetorical pattern in Cohen’s essay:

  1. name or identify the writing/rhetorical pattern as specifically as possible.
  2. present or introduce a few examples of the pattern. Make sure to indicate where the example is found in the essay. What is Cohen talking about at that moment in the essay?
  3. analyze two examples of the pattern. This requires you to:
    1. research the example in order to
    2. define it and
    3. explain where it comes from, how it is typically used, and/or who typically uses it
  4. make a conclusion about the intended audience based on your analysis. In other words, who do you think would be the type of person who would be able to quickly or easily grasp the examples of the rhetorical pattern.
  5. explain how this helps you to better understand Cohen’s stance towards his topic and audience.
  6. discuss the rhetorical purpose of the example or pattern. To do this, you should consider how (and why) the example or pattern might appeal to ethos, logos, and/or pathos.

Each group must post their analysis below. Your analysis should take up two to three paragraphs. (Don’t worry about grammar and spelling; this is just a rough draft. Just try to explain yourself as clearly as possible to make a persuasive argument.)

  1. Cohen offers italicized technical patterns like “monstrum” and “morte’d Author” in order to help the readers understand the who are the intended audiences. we will explain these two terms, why Cohen chooses them.
monstrum is a latin word of the english word monster, Cohen states monstrum is etymological which means its from the original of word. And latin culture is one of the oldest culture , he connected monster to monstrum in order to shows that monsters body present the culture more.
morte’d Author is king, his story in thesis 2 that no matter how many times he killed the ogre of mount saint micheal , the monster will reappeared … In a word this story ,support his idea that monster always escape.

  2. In the “Monster Culture(seven thesis), Jeffrey Jerome Cohen uses many writing patterns, one of the significant patterns is that italicized technical terms. From the thesis I to IV, we can read Cohen uses terms like “différance(2),” “morte d’Arthurs(4),” ”modus legendi(4),” and “la décadence(5).” In thesis I, the author refers that “Derrida’s familiar chasm of différance.” This term comes from French, which means “difference and deferral of meaning.” Even though it is philosophical term, Cohen utilizes the term to imply different meaning, so the readers can relate the point he is trying to make. From Owen’s zero draft, the smartest Owen writes that “‘In other words, ‘différance(4)’ is the best term which can describe author’s purpose in here. Back to previous sentence and go forward to the next sentence, Cohen is explaining his opinion monsters are created in a certain moment, and it revives with the brand new meanings they receive. Therefore, the author chooses ‘Derrida’s familiar chasm of différance(4)” to describe ’monster’s bones’. He refers the literature professional term for his readers which presents the best description of his opinion.”
In Thesis II, Cohen states that “la décadence and its new possibilities, homophobia and its hateful imperatives…(5)” The “la décadence” means “decline,” in an abstract sense, which is a term originating form Medieval Latin.

  3. Cohen uses historical examples to convince his audience of his stance. Some of his examples that he used includes the Justification of Hebrew colonization and the Monsterization of The Iris. In his essay he uses example of Hebrew colonization as a example of exaggeration of cultural differences turning into monsters. The original inhabitants of Canaan were “envisioned as menacing giants” to justify the colonization of a different culture (8).
The other historical example he uses is the monsterization of The Irish people. Cohen says that one of the reasons people are monterizied is because of natural differences. In his example he talks about how the English viewed the Irish to have a “monsterous gender”(11). Given the types of historical examples used; mainly European historical examples his intended audience seems to be for scholars of European history.

  4. in the article “monster culture”in thesis II when author use the pattern of historical event.he mentioned that myth of monsters existence and disappearance.he bring up Yeti form Tibetan snow mountain which is still being as a myth and unfound for hundreds years.but people today still found its existence. such example that prove cohen’s statement will be when he mentions KingArthur killing ogre of mount Saunt Michael. The supported his statement because it’s two similar look giant appeared in different history time period.
overall.,author is trying to give various example of similar monsters that appear in different time period, to proves statement that monster is a immaterial culture.
